The annual NENA Standards and Best Practices conference was held in Orlando, FL January 21 – 24, 2019. The overwhelming theme of this year’s conference was the NG9-1-1 PSAP (Next Generation 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point) standards being released later this year and how PSAPs need to prepare for the NG9-1-1 changes that will soon impact them.
The theme of the conference was “Unlocking the Next Generation” and dealt with topics from NG9-1-1 standards and operations, to social networking, non-traditional call centers, and lessons learned from early adopters. The conference participants unanimously agreed that NG911 is needed today. Several key issues were discussed, including the issue of PSAPs ability to stay current with today’s IoT (Internet of Things) technology and incorporating that technology into their systems. Another very important issue was the need for funding which is significant and required for NG911.
